‘Wewe Uliwapea Nini?’- Senator Ledama Questions Ruto’s Alleged Ksh 200M Royal Jet Offer From Friends

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has raised doubts about President William Ruto's recent claim that his state visit to the United States on a private jet cost Kenyan taxpayers less than Ksh 10 million.

President Ruto stated that he was offered the jet by friends at a significantly discounted rate, a claim that has sparked questions from both the public and political figures.

In a post on his official X account on May 31, 2024, Senator Ledama questioned the authenticity of Ruto's statement.

He wondered what the President might have given in return for such a generous offer, especially given that the cost of a return trip on a luxury jet can typically run up to Ksh 200 million.

Ledama wrote, "Good morning President William. If you were given a luxury jet one that costs US$200M, what did you give the ‘philanthropist’ in return?"

The controversy began during the National Prayer Breakfast on May 30, 2024, when President Ruto addressed the speculation around his travel expenses. He claimed that after being quoted Ksh 70 million for the cheapest available jet, he considered flying with Kenya Airways.

However, before finalizing any bookings, Ruto said he received an irresistible offer from friends who provided the jet for only Ksh 10 million.

“When I saw the debate in Kenya about how I traveled to the US, there were all sorts of figures thrown around. People said the plane must have cost Ksh 200 million because the president needed to arrive in style holding Rachel’s hand," Ruto explained. He emphasized his frugality, stating, "I am not a madman. When I was told the cheapest plane was Ksh 70 million, I told my office to go book Kenya Airways."

Ruto further defended his decision by reiterating that he prioritizes minimizing government expenditure. “When some friends heard that I was going to travel using KQ, they asked me how much I wanted to pay. I said I am not ready to pay more than Ksh 20 million. They said, bring Ksh 10 million and we will give you the plane,” he added.
