Betty Mbereko, a 40-year-old widow, has married her 23-year-old son, Farai Mbereko, after a unique relationship evolved over the years.
Betty, who has been a widow for 12 years, has raised Farai alone following her husband's death.
Their relationship, which began as a typical mother-son bond, took an unexpected and controversial turn three years ago when it developed into a romantic involvement.
Recently, Betty revealed she is six months pregnant with Farai's child, which will be both her son and grandchild.
The couple's relationship came to light during a village court session where Betty defended their actions.
She argued that her years of hardship and dedication in raising Farai entitled her to a special bond with him. She preferred marrying her son over any of her late husband's younger brothers, who had shown interest in her.
Farai supports his mother's decision and expressed readiness to formalize their union. He emphasized that their relationship and her pregnancy are consensual, aiming to protect his mother from accusations of promiscuity.
Farai is also prepared to complete the unpaid bride price, known as lobola, which his father had not fully settled before his death.
The local community, however, reacted with strong disapproval. Headman Nathan Muputirwa voiced the village's outrage, describing the union as a bad omen.
While he cited historical consequences for such relationships, he acknowledged that modern legal constraints prevent severe actions against the couple.
Facing intense community backlash, Betty and Farai decided to leave their village for an undisclosed location to escape further conflict.
